Cross of Swords: Part 12:
Next Day

Chris didn't regain consciousness until late the next day. Cat had stayed by her side the whole time. She was amazed that she had never noticed Chris's sword until then. It was identical to hers.

"Cat?" Chris said starting to come around.

"Here, drink some water. Don't try to talk."

Chris took a huge sip and after a moment sat straight up. "Holy Ground? We are on Holy Ground are we not?"

"It happened during the Quickening." Cat answered referring to the legend. "It scared away the demons."

"A storm powerful enough to scare away the demons. I never thought I would have something to do with the temple being restored to Holy Ground. Will would have been proud."

"He is. Chris can I ask you something?"

"Yes."

"Your sword? Where did you get it?"

"Will made it the day we were married. He had one, I had one, and he made one for our youngest child. Why?"

"The six machetes. What do they mean?"

"Will always believed the sixth generation to posses the swords would be special. And you are."

"You mean..."

"You do not get to become a Watcher unless you know everyone of your subjects past secrets, including what background can be found or linked to another Immortal. I was wondering how long it would take you to catch on."

Cat stared at Chris in disbelief. Sitting beside her was in a way an ancestor of hers, and she had helped defend their honor. "I can't believe this."

"Well, believe it. Get some rest, tomorrow we head back to Seacouver."

"Then what?"

"We find a place to live."

"We? Are you serious? I thought Joe hadn't made up his mind yet."

"Let me just say, Joe has a soft spot that I have always been able to get to. Besides, the final decision was never his to decide, it is yours."

"Shouldn't it be up to you? You're the one that will have to live with me. I may not be able to change over night."

"I do not expect you to change over night. Just over time, just over time."

The two Immortals fell asleep, and lying between them on top of Wills grave, laid the two identical swords crossed over each other.
